Library Services

The EWU main library is housed on the first floor of the Centennial Building. In addition, there is an annex housed within the James Weldon Johnson Complex (JWJ). There are approximately 13, 350 volumes and provides access to over 259,000 electronic books (e-Books).

Access to the more popular periodical titles in the Library’s collection is now available online through the Flipster database, provided by EBSCO. Access to the EWC library collection is provided by an integrated online catalog and circulation system managed and provided by OCLC. The non-print collection includes electronic databases, CDs and DVDs. Off-campus access to the electronic databases is available 24/7 for EWC students, faculty, and staff.

The Library is open 7 days per week during the Fall and Spring semesters, for a total of 73 hours per week. No restrictions are placed on college patrons for the in-house use of the Library’s resources and services. Students, faculty, and staff must have a current college ID to borrow library materials. Internet access and word processing are available on all library computers for student, faculty and staff use.

Library Purpose

The mission of the Library is to facilitate academic learning and research, to support the college curriculum, to enhance classroom instruction and the critical thinking process, the teaching of information literacy, and to promote professional, ethical, and social growth by providing the latest information resources, services, and technologies to students and faculty. The Library further endeavors to stimulate and encourage the development of lifelong learning.
The traditional purpose of an academic library is to support the curriculum. This can be accomplished in a nontraditional way by relying heavily on electronic resources, as well as print and non-print materials. A 21st century library is also dedicated to the provision of information literacy. Most importantly, the purpose of the Edward Waters College Library is to focus on the nature of the academic programs and of the student body served, demanding nothing less.

Library Collection & Services

Circulating Collection
The collection provides resources to support the College’s academic programs. Circulating books are shelved by the Library of Congress call numbers and may be borrowed and returned at the Circulation desk. Patrons must have a valid Edward Waters College ID to borrow books. Patrons are also responsible for returning borrowed materials on time and in good condition.
The loan period of EWC’s circulating books for library users is 14 days. Please check with the circulation staff if assistance is needed to determine when a borrowed item is due.
Loaned materials can be renewed for one additional loan period (14 days).
The library may send courtesy reminders of overdue materials; however, it remains the responsibility of the borrower to return materials promptly. Failure to receive such a reminder in no way affects the liability of the borrower.
Borrowers should promptly report to the library that a book has been lost or damaged. All borrowers are responsible for lost or damaged items. For each lost or damaged item, a borrower will be charged the current purchase price of the item(s) plus a $10 non-refundable processing fee per item to cover the cost of overdue notices, ordering, and processing of replacements.
If the item is returned, a refund will be made up to one year with a receipt or a cancelled check. The processing fee is not refundable. Please contact the Circulation Department for information on paying fees.

Note: The library will not accept a replacement copy purchased by the patron. Patrons with lost items will not be allowed to borrow additional materials until these items are returned or paid for.

The periodicals collection is available for reference use only. The A/V collection is available for faculty and staff use only.
Reference librarians are available to provide individual assistance in using library resources, completing research projects, and helping with the Online Catalog. Patrons who desire in-depth assistance are encouraged to make an appointment with the Reference librarian.
The Reference collection includes almanacs, data compliations, dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, handbooks, statutes, yearbooks, and other core reference materials. Reference materials do not circulate but may be used in the library.
Titles and holdings of library materials are searchable online. Please check at the Circulation or Reference Desk for assistance.

The library offers formal instruction in using a wide range of library resources. These sessions must be scheduled by an instructor at least two weeks in advance. General and special subject sessions are available by appointment. Call (904) 470-8081 for more information or to set an appointment.
EWC faculty may place books, photocopied articles, and other materials on reserve for students. In order to use reserve materials, patrons will be asked to leave their EWC ID card at the Circulation Desk. Reserved items are on loan for a two hour period, or longer if the item(s) is not requested.
