Graduate Boom Fuels Record-Breaking Applications at Florida’s First HBCU

Edward Waters University, the State of Florida’s first independent institution of higher learning and first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) has officially shattered its all-time record for student applications, receiving nearly 11,500 applications to date for the Fall 2025 term—surpassing all previous benchmarks in the institution’s 158-year history.
The university has seen a 6.2% increase in total applications compared to this time last year. In addition to the growth in applications, Edward Waters has also experienced a 17.6% increase in enrollment deposits for new students, signaling strong student intent to enroll and continued momentum for the institution as a destination of choice.
This surge in interest reflects Edward Waters University’s growing reputation and is fueled by innovative academic programming, dynamic institutional leadership, and strategic outreach initiatives.

Notably, applications to Edward Waters’ graduate programs have soared, with the university reporting a 153% increase over the same time last year. Nearly 250 applications have been received across the institution’s four newly launched master’s degree programs: the Master of Cybersecurity, Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Master of Education Policy & Advocacy.
“This is more than just a numbers game—it’s about the work we’ve put in to tell the Edward Waters story,” said Dr. Jennifer Price, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Strategic Matriculant Services. “Our team has worked strategically and collaboratively to ensure we are attracting and enrolling students who are ready to thrive, persist, and graduate. We’re incredibly excited about what this means for the future of our institution.”
Mr. Kendrick Dunklin, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, echoed that sentiment, praising the university’s admissions team for their exceptional commitment.

Academic leadership credits the surge in graduate applications to the institution’s bold efforts in academic innovation and the implementation of visionary programs.

Registration for the Fall 2025 semester remains open. Classes begin on August 4, 2025, with Fall Regular Registration ending on August 15, 2025.
