Mission

Established in 2021 by Edward Waters University President, Dr. A Zachary Faison, Jr., and informed by the vision and legacy of its namesake, the A. Philip Randolph Institute for Law, Race, Social Justice, and Economic Policy at Edward Waters University provides opportunities for students, scholars, practitioners and community members to examine and exchange ideas related to race, law, and socioeconomic policy matters through research, lectures, symposia and scholarship. Advancing the University’s goal of developing excellence in scholarship, research, and service for the betterment of humanity, the Randolph Institute will facilitate generative partnerships and programs to interrogate and dismantle the root causes of racial and socioeconomic inequality.

The Legacy of A. Philip Randolph

Asa Philip Randolph spent his formative years in Jacksonville, Florida, and attended Edward Waters University before becoming a groundbreaking leader, organizer, and social activist who championed equitable labor rights for African American communities and one of the most impactful civil rights and social justice leaders of the 20th century. His activism spanned 60 years, and included the organization of the largest labor union for Black workers in the United States and the coordination of two Marches on Washington (1941 and 1963). The Edward Waters University Distinguished Speaker Series is a student and campus-wide academic and experiential engagement initiative intended to present a robust and varied collection of distinguished and scholarly speakers to the EWU campus community. The new initiative seeks to engage the views, ideas, and espoused ideals expressed by national thought leaders, authors, entertainers, activists, advocates, athletes, educators, business leaders, and opinion shapers who will be featured as a part of the series.
