Program Philosophy
Edward Waters University (EWU) is a comprehensive applied
research institution. Our Bachelor of Science in Public
Health (BSPH) degree is uniquely positioned to focus on the
health outcomes of marginalized and underserved
populations. The program emphasizes community
innovation, interdisciplinary research, and a global
perspective to solve complex health challenges.
Interdisciplinary Research Model
Program Details
Edward Waters University (EWU) is positioned to serve the evolving needs of students,
region, and state of Florida in the coming decades. As a gateway institution within the region
and globally, EWU will serve as a hub for local and global talent, cross-disciplinary research,
business partnerships, global leadership and local entrepreneurship and innovation. Given
the positioning of the institution within the scope of the social, economic, and political
landscape, EWU will emerge as a comprehensive applied research institution, offering an
innovative Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BPH). The degree will encompass
theoretical application of real-life experiences within the research, managerial, social and
community justice, and educational agency space. This program introduces fresh ways of
thinking about analysis of social agency, policy, and servicing – in particular, determining
scientific ways of protecting and improving the health of people and their community,
especially for underrepresented and marginalized people
Through interdisciplinary coursework including focused research in various public health
studies coupled with theory, effectiveness of technology, and experiential learning, the
Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BPH) will provide a holistic perspective to the
student preparing for post-graduate study, management positions and, entrepreneurship in
nonprofit organizations, as well as the government sector. Further, this program will allow
students to network beyond the local community through team building that will occur across
a diversified national and international contingent of scholars opting to enroll in this program.
Program Goals
Through a nimble curriculum, nurturing faculty, commitment to contemporary pedagogy and
exposure to contemporary experts, the faculty and students in the Bachelor of Science in
Public Health program will achieve the following:
Interdisciplinary Practice
Educate individuals for interdisciplinary collaborative health care practice in local, regional, national, and global environments.
Program Evaluation
Plan, implement, and evaluate health programs to improve the health of vulnerable and diverse groups, with a focus on urban population and health education.
Core Knowledge
Educate students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds in core public health knowledge areas so that they are equipped to help prevent disease and promote physical and mental health and social well-being through public health practice leadership, and research;
Graduate Preparation
Prepare students for graduate study in various health professional fields and public health practice jobs.
Program Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOS)
The Program Student Learning Outcomes of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health
program understand and apply the core philosophical and ethical values, concepts, and
functions of public health in theory and practice. The program level student learning
outcomes are listed below.
- Using clear and concise communication to convey relevant public health information so that decision makers can formulate informed decisions.
- Utilizing technology (such as computers, accounting software, information databases) to facilitate and enhance public health and epidemiological reporting processes.
- Identifying the appropriate environmental and disaster preparedness issues critical to analyzing public health and other information used for identifying and assessing opportunities and risks, developing organizational plans, allocating resources, and accomplishing objectives.
- Employing national, international, and historical perspectives to analyze public health issues Identifying ethical issues associated with public health situations and apply appropriate principles of ethics and civic responsibility;
- Using analytical and research tools to monitor evolving public health standards and practices and to maintain professional skills in a changing public health environment.

Admission standards for Edward Waters University forensic science candidates will be:

Minimum GPA
Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.
Programs Completed
Completion of Associate of Arts (AA) degree from a Florida College System or State University System college/university, or completion of Edward Waters University General Education Program requirements.
Transfer Students
The Public Health Unit only accepts public health courses from CEPH (Council on Education for Public Health) accredited institutions.
