Mission Statement:

The Edward Waters College Criminal Justice program is dedicated to educate, research, and service in the field of criminal justice and related areas of public safety. It strives to endow students with the skills of critical thinking and effective communication; the capacity for personal and social growth and creative problem solving that result from the ability to acquire and evaluate information; the ability to navigate advanced technological systems; and the awareness of the diverse cultural, historical, economic, and political forces that shape our society.

What can you do with a B.A. Degree in Criminal Justice from Edward Waters College? Just about anything! The career choices for Criminal Justice majors are diverse and can include work in local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, corrections, probation and the court system.

Students who wish to major in the Bachelor of Arts Degree program for each of the four (4) Concentrations must meet the following criteria: 

  • Students must have a 2.0 overall G.P.A. with the following exceptions: 
    • 2.5 GPA required for 3+1 Police Academy
  • Students must have successfully completed a minimum of 25 credit hours of the General Education requirements, to include:
    • English ENC 1101 & 1102
    • Introduction to Communication COMM 2000
    • Math MAC 1105
    • MGF 1106
  • Students must have successfully completed CCJ 2220- Introduction to Criminal Justice.
  • Students must sign an Acknowledgement and Waiver regarding their Criminal History.
  • Students must not have been convicted of any felony; First degree misdemeanor students must not have a history of domestic violence.

Admissions applications are to be submitted to the Department Chair and reviewed for admission consideration.
All students will be required to submit to an interview with the Department Chair for admission consideration. 

Students with prior felony or misdemeanor arrests must submit a Letter or Determination to the Department Chair for consideration with the appropriate supporting documentation to include a Judgment and Sentence and circumstances of offense.

Program Goals

  • To educate students in the field of Criminal Justice and Forensic Science, utilizing a variety of instructional methods and techniques to stimulate and/or motivate students to learn.
  • To help students understand the role and functions of the three major components of Criminal Justice System: Law Enforcement, Courts and Corrections.
  • To help students understand the role and functions of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • To teach students the theories of crime causation and crime prevention measures.
  • To help students understand the basic principles of the American Judicial System; a process by which an individual is tried, convicted and sentenced (including the legal implications of inmates’ constitutional rights).
  • To involve students in research/practical experience, and involvement with professional organizations in the field.
